Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween everyone!

We didn't take any pictures of our costumes this weekend (Picasso and the NYTimes crossword on Friday, a Freudian Slip and Dangling Participle Saturday) but here's one from 2009.   It's old, but appropriate as in 4 days I'm going to visit my cousin Sharon (aka the pink Powerpuff girl) in Los Angeles!

Hopefully I'll be caught up on my sleep by then.

Signs in fingerlings

When slicing fingerling potatoes the other day I was struck by the symbolism.

Before you guys flag this for inappropriateness, pause to compare the potatoes to the first image I saw in my first art history class.

The Venus von Willendorf, Vienna

Art historians, back me up on this?  Someone needs to write a dissertation on the similarities between prehistoric art and potatoes.

First Pie of the Season!

First homemade pie of the season!  Used Thomas Keller's butter crust from Ad Hoc at Home and a caramel & granny smith apple filling from the Edible Selby article in the Times Magazine a few weeks ago.

This is the first pie we've made but definitely not the first one we've eaten.

Chocolate cream pie, Greenwood's on Green St.

icebox lemon pie, the Silver Skillet, Atlanta, GA

Pumpkin pie at Greenwood's on Green St (again)

not pictured, the Chess pie at Abbatoir in Atlanta.

Fall has been good to us.

New Orleans

Worst blogger ever.  A week and a half later, some New Orleans highlights.  We'll probably hopefully do some posts about some of the specific places we went to in the future.  For now, know that we LOVED it and are already planning our return!

Red Top Mountain camping

We went camping this past weekend at Red Top Mountain State Park.  We did a little bit of hiking but mostly hanging out and eating things like loaded baked potatoes, tilapia, and smores (not pictured).  We're looking forward to camping more as the weather cools!

A new Southern favorite

This past weekend we left the city for a night on the mountaintop at the Red Top Mountain State Park.  On our way we made a detour to Roswell, GA for a meal at Greenwood's on Green St.

It was the best southern food in Georgia.  Maybe anywhere.

I know that's an incredible claim to make but see for yourself...
half a rotisserie chicken in a thick plum sauce, with cheese grits and mashed potatoes

 honey-glazed carrots, collards, sweet potatoes

amazing amazing cornbread with sweet butter

broccoli casserole with crispy onions on top.  THE BEST.

shrimp and grits

 more collards and black-eyed peas

 blackberry pie

chocolate cream pie

The pie was heart-breakingly/pants-splittenly good, especially after a truly decadent midday meal.  When ordering, be warned that a "slice of pie" really means a solid quarter pie.

and there was a tree growing through the porch.  What more can you ask for?  Roswell, we'll be back!
