Dumpling Envy...

Lilly and I recently had lunch at Dintaifung. This is not a hole in the wall that we just stumbled upon it is the undisputed king of dumpling shops in Taiwan. President Clinton dined here on a visit, they sell all sort of merchandise with their logo, and they are about to open a satellite shop in Seattle. That said, it has earned its place. The dumplings are enviable.

The shop itself has 4 stories of dining rooms but lines were still out the door. We had to wait 45 minutes for a table. We would have willingly waited longer.

Their specialty is soup dumplings. They are prepared with bullion that liquifies as the dumpling is steamed. One eats it by biting a hole and sucking out the soup. You can see liguid in the picture below. After sucking out the soup one eats the whole dumpling with soy sauce and ginger. We got 2 kinds of soup dumplings: Pork and Crab Roe.

We also tried a third dumpling. The top was shrimp and the bottom pork.

To finish off we got dessert dumplings filled with sweet seasame paste and taro.

Each dumpling was so small and seemingly simple. But looking at the kitchen and you see how much effort goes into making these little guys.

  1. That looks just like those cocaine packaging rooms that are always hidden behind an unmarked door (or possibly a beaded curtain) in the movies.
